Don't underestimate the power of choice, awareness, mindfulness, and intention.

A long time ago, a wise Cherokee elder sat with his grandson by a flickering fire. The night was calm, the air heavy with the scent of the forest, and the soft glow of the flames cast dancing shadows on their faces. The elder, with a deep and measured voice, shared a legend with the boy that would become a guiding metaphor for countless generations:
"My son, there is a battle inside all of us, a battle between two wolves. One wolf is dark and fierce – representing anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, and ego. The other wolf is bright and noble – representing love, joy, peace, kindness, humility, empathy, and hope. These two wolves fight for control within us all."
The grandson, wide-eyed and curious, asked, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?"
The elder's gaze softened, and he answered, "The one you feed."
This simple yet profound concept is an incredible mirror of the human experience. It is a tale of choice, of awareness, and of the power we hold within our hearts and minds.
It reminds us that life is an unending series of choices, some small, some monumental. Every decision, thought, and action is a fork in our path. Do we choose to react with frustration and impatience when faced with challenges, or do we lean into understanding and patience? Each moment presents an opportunity to decide which wolf we will feed, and it is this power of choice that determines the quality of our inner lives.
In order to feed the noble wolf, we must first become aware of the battle within. Awareness is a light that allows us to see our thoughts and emotions clearly – without it, we risk being swept away by the currents of our darker impulses. By cultivating a practice of mindfulness, we gain the ability to pause, observe, and make intentional choices. Awareness is not about denying the existence of the dark wolf, but about acknowledging it without giving it power over you.
Similarly, the principle of “what we focus on expands” suggests that what we give our attention to grows stronger. When we dwell on fears, worries, and grudges, we amplify their presence in our lives. Conversely, when we focus on gratitude, compassion, and resilience, these qualities flourish. And where attention goes, energy flows. By choosing to feed the noble wolf, we create a ripple effect that transforms not only our internal world but also the external one.
The direction of our energy is like the sun's rays: it can nourish or scorch, depending on where it's directed. When we focus on negative thoughts, we deplete ourselves, feeling drained and overwhelmed. On the other hand, uplifting thoughts infuse us with vitality and hope. Just as a garden grows lush and vibrant under care and attention, our inner landscape thrives when we tend to it with positive energy.
The heart of the “Two Wolves” legend holds an important truth about the nature of our minds: our thoughts are powerful architects of our reality. They shape how we perceive the world, interact with others, and respond to challenges. Negative thinking narrows our perspective, while positive thinking opens doors to growth and possibility. The choice of which wolf to feed is a choice of which narrative to believe – the one that tears us down or the one that lifts us up.
The Legend of the Two Wolves invites us to reflect on our own lives and examine the wolves within, to take ownership of our thoughts and actions, to cultivate awareness, and to focus our energy on what truly matters. It reminds us that the power to shape our destiny lies within us, in the fundamental act of choosing which wolf to feed.
As you go through your day, ask yourself: Which wolf am I feeding? Which wolf would I like to feed? Don't underestimate the power of choice, awareness, mindfulness, and intention.
And remember, the seeds you nurture today will grow into the garden of your tomorrow. Feed the noble wolf, and watch your world transform.
